Brides!
Everyone loves a bride, right? Thanks to the advanced state of my state, two of my girlfriends are getting married this weekend, and I'm making the cake. I know—what in heaven's name was I thinking?? That I love them and would probably do anything they asked me to.
I sent the girls over to look at my pal Jen's Perfect Party Cake, which they agreed looked perfect. After all, what is a wedding reception if not a big party?
I've been baking layers, wrapping them in yards of Saran Wrap, and freezing them. The wedding is on Saturday, so I'll probably be assembling and frosting tomorrow night. It's a fairly small wedding, so I'm only doing two layers.
Here's the plastic brides trying out the pans.
They do look like brides, don't they? I though I was going to have to saw two bride and groom sets in half and toss the grooms, so I was all excited to find this pair sold together. Right on, I thought. But no. The man at the counter pointed out that these were bridesmaids. Who the hell puts plastic bridesmaids on a cake?? Isn't it enough to be flanked by a small army of actual women, without having to represent them on the cake? But my idea of sawing the bride and groom sets in half would have left me with one-armed brides, so I'm going with these gals. Maybe a little tulle on their heads?
p.s. to post
Wow. The proprietors of The Preppy Peach and Five Tomatoes are not kidding. The latter sent this.
And all I can say is . . . wow.

the brides are adorable.
I made that Perfect Party Cake, it's a great recipe, really good flavor combination.
It's going to be awesome! You are such a nice friend. The bridesmaids are fine. I've worked on a cake that had army men on one layer and plastic farm animals on another... I think this solution will look far better than amputee brides. xxoo
Those are perfect. Bridesmaids, pshaw! I think it's some marketing person's subversive way of selling two brides together without upsetting their customers in Alaska, or wherever it is that people are annoyed by the idea of two brides.
They look like brides to me (w/or w/out tulle).
I'm sure the cake will turn out very elegant. Enjoy the party!
Too bad the rest of the states cannot be as progressive as CA.
I think the bridesmaids are perfect for the top of the cake! Why those are even sold is beyond me.....
this is going to be great! but, really, bridesmaid figurines??! that's crazy. can't wait to see the finished product! congrats to your friends, and i hope our state makes the correct vote on prop 8 to keep the celebrations coming!
OMG, Rachella's comment nearly made me spit out my coffee through my nose! The brides are adorable. Bridesmaids never entered my mind when I was looking at the pic before reading the post. Who knew they even made bridesmaids figures for cakes, anyways?! Can't wait to see the finished prodcut!
I think the brides are perfect!
For those of you who are wondering about the bridesmaid figures, here in small town south GA, the wedding cake is often HUGE with these sort of stairs going down each side with the whole wedding party represented (brides party on left side, grooms on right) - CRAZY, I know! In my infinite wisdom, I chose to go with a simple design I found in Martha Weddings!
BTW - did you see Barack at the Alfred E Smith dinner? The man rocked some white tie and tails!
Absolutely perfect! I'm with Purple Flowers, they sure look like two beautiful brides to me. :)
I love it! They are great the way they are - I totally thought they were brides to begin with (not too many people wear veils anymore - I am going to be one of them).
how cute!! take lots of pictures! what a perfect wedding, two dresses!
They do both look like brides - and just like The Preppy Peach said, people do monstrous cakes with the bridal party marching up the stairs.

Gorgeous & glad it's able to happen:)
I can't wait to see the cake!! Please please do post a picture for us. :)
Can't wait to see how it turns out ... and best wishes to your friends!
I think they look like brides.
That super-mega nightmare cake with the bridges and stuff...ok, I admit it...these were really popular when I was a kid and I thought they were sooooo swanky and excellent. I remember standing in awe at the bakery looking at one that was even MORE elaborate than this, with the lit-up fountain and all, but the colors were white and RED and there were about four more staircases covered in people. Holy Valentine Horror Cake, Batman!
I thought that they looked like lovely brides! Good luck with the cake!
Cindy: Quick ?
Will it take a long time for people to find my site? I am not getting any replies, except the one from you (thanks ;) Not sure of the direction it's going in (other than right now - to hell)
Do you mind?

tx - enjoy the wedding party!
I thought they were brides. I think it looks great. Sawed in half brides may have been a bit tacky.
That cake looks so yummy.
I think they are adorable, plus who in their right mind would let their bridesmaid's wear white???
