Me: Do you love me?
Him: Why are you asking?
Me: Dunno. You always ask me that.
Him: What did you break?
The following conversation from a few days ago is probably Husband's idea of payback for my contention that I never would have gotten married if I didn't think I could also get divorced. Don't get me wrong: I want to be married and stay married, but it's got to be because it's what I want, not because I feel I don't have choices or options. A sort of academic point but an important one to me.
Me: So it's 2008.
Him: Yup. Do you think we should get a divorce this year?
Me: An interesting idea. What do you think?
Him: Well, our tenth anniversary is this year, and I was thinking that there might be some expectations. On your part. That would cost me money. If we were going to get divorced, it would be good to do it before then.
Me: No, let's stay married.
Him: OK. We'll give it another year then.
