My excellent new calendar

At lunch time today I got to my spin class just a few minutes too late, and it was FILLED UP! Damn those new-years-resolution makers!! I left my workout buddies happily spinning away and to cheer myself up went down the street to a book store to shop for calendars.

The beauty in procrastinating on calendar buying is that everything is by this time half off. But I would have happily paid full price for this.

Brought to us by those marketing geniuses at Chronicle Books (who I seriously believe can sell a book on absolutely anything), Anne Taintor's sassy calendar adds a modern twist to artwork from vintage 1930s, 40s, and 50s advertisements. Her website shows lots of other excellent products and includes her interesting story of how she journeyed from Harvard to a career in cartography and finally to chucking it all to become the propietor of a small but very successful business. There's also a section on some of the models in the ads who she's actually identified and located.

Here are pictures from other calendars, but you get the idea.

I bought the usual Sierra Club calendar for kitchen, but this will spiff up my office nicely.

But I wonder . . . do you think people will look back on today's advertising and think women of our time look as lame??

I was thinking the same thing when I watched "Mad Men"--they were puffing away on cigarettes, drinking screwdrivers for breakfast and driving around in boatlike cars with their kids jumping back and forth from the front to the back seat....what are we doing now that will look ridiculous in 50 years?
