Punctuation versus rock and roll

I know there are many people in the world more cool than I, but rarely is this demonstrated more clearly than the contrast between two tee shirt blog posts.

I was working on a post about a most excellent tee shirt I would like to buy. But I took a moment off to see what Melissa Morris was up to over at her super-stylish blog and found that she had just posted about . . . tee shirts.

Well, heck. Here's the deal. She posted about tee shirts by Izzy Gold, whose shirts feature edgy pen and ink drawings with captions that read things like "Bad Ass" (I can't imagine her wearing one of these, can you?? Hers must say something else.) Izzy Gold even hosted a swank party to celebrate the opening of a swank store that will undoubtedly sell his hip shirts.

But I still think my shirt is pretty exciting too. Undeterred, I present to you the semicolon shirt, brought to us by the Dictionary Evangelist. In celebration of the The New York Times article on the use of a semicolon on a New York City Transit public service placard, said evangelist created the Semicolon Appreciation Society and the appropriate garb to go with it.

It's that nice?

Babies can get in on the action too.

And she also sells these handy stickers for correcting public signage. What fun!

No party, but this was all publicized in the electronic newsletter Copyediting's Tip of the Week. My managing editor forwarded it to our department, but there were no drinks included. I guess you can't win them all.

I don't know from Izzy Gold, but the semicolon shirt rules. Thank you - now I know what to get my husband for his birthday in a few weeks!! He'll love that!

I think your shirt is very exciting. I would so take a "semicolon" over "bad ass". ;)

I agree; the semicolon is the most misunderstood punctuation in the English language.
